Cloning best practices and use cases

I know that the cloning requirements varies from org. to org.

But I want to listen from you how/when you are making use of cloning. Best practices on this topic.

and especially before an upgrade (DEV), I think its good to clone from PROD. Your thoughts/experiences please 🙂
