Cmdb and mobile phones

Hi,

I must setup a CMDB to manage Mobile Phones Assets/CIs.

Up to now I did not find any example or indication.

Main questions are:

"should I create one asset for the SIM, one asset for the telephone number and one asset for the mobile device ?"

And if so,

"what classes should I use for assets, CI and Model categories ?"

And last,

"what kind of relationships should I use to link SIM,Phone Number and devices ?"

If you have any experience/examples on the matter, please let me know.

Have you implemented your solution? Do you have any recommendations or screenshots as mentioned above?

We are looking to track our mobile devices, including sim cards and subscriptions.

Hi Steve,

yes we did, here is our approach:

• Created new model category "Mobile Abo" with asset class alm_asset
• Created new model category "SIM" with asset class alm_hardware and custom CI class
• Registered all our existing subscriptions under contract --> subscriptions

Example:

In the screenshot below you can see a "Mobile Abo" asset with 2 SIM cards and a contract assigned.

This "Mobile Abo" Asset allows you to be very flexible with SIM card and contract assignments, so you don't have to create new assets if the contract is upgraded for instance. You just assign a new contract subscription instead.

Also, if you retire the "Mobile Abo" Parent Asset, all the child assets are retired automatically as well. This also applies to assignment changes.

I hope you'll get the idea behind it, I'll gladly answer further questions though.

How do we map the tables for Model Category to maintain the relationship for these mobile assets and CIs (Ex: CI Class: cmdb_ci_comm and Asset Class: alm_hardware)? or Do we have to create custom Asset Table? If custom,Then what is the best approach/process in creating the custom asset table.

Kindly Suggest the Asset Table.

Hello Richard, 

we are considering a similar approach with different CI/Asset for mobile device and SIM. However, we additionally also have different types of mobile subscriptions (different data volume etc.). Is this a part of the SIM in your model? Or how do you manage this?
