Customizing order guide widget for structured onboarding

Hello ServiceNow community,

I'm working on a project to build an onboarding order guide for our Employee Center. I have a requirement to organize the catalog items triggered in the order guide into distinct sections such as:

Access (with 3 catalog items)
Assets (with 3 catalog items)
Administration (with 3 catalog items)
I believe I'll need to customize the order guide widget to achieve this layout. I have a couple of concerns and would appreciate feedback:

Configuration: Can anyone guide me or provide pointers on how this configuration can be achieved? Is there an out-of-the-box approach, or is widget customization the only way?

Upgradability and Maintainability: How will customizing this widget impact us in terms of upgrades? I'm aware that customizing OOB widgets might pose challenges during platform upgrades. Are there best practices to ensure minimal impact, or should I consider building a custom widget from scratch?
