File attachments on Catalog Items

We have a financial shared services center as a primary stakeholder for ServiceNow. Due to the line item nature of their work, many of their Catalog Items necessitate the user download an excel sheet, fill in the line items, then re-attach during the request.

In the past, we would simply upload the file using the Upload module, then copy/paste the link into the Catalog Item description. Now that we're Gen2, that doesn't work anymore (since apparently nodes don't like sharing files). Furthermore, since the file is an xlsx, the last x is being ripped off the filename, which apparently is something I can't work around.

So now my company is in a tight spot. They've swallowed gallons of "Platform as a Service" koolaid, built a solution that the business now relies on, and with a snap of the fingers, the solution is not only broken but can't be supported.

Is anyone else in a similar circumstance? Has anyone found a workaround?

I am aware of issues there are issues if you are using the Content Management System to use attachments with catalog items. We had the same problems but I found a article on here that someone provided a work around to address that problem (I have used it).
