Is it possible to implement ITAM with Software Licenses without implementing SAM?

Hi guys,

I am working to understand the asset management modules and how the information flow between ITAM and SAM in the ServiceNow applications. I understand that Asset Management Application includes some modules that related to software   (asset license entitlements, user license entitlements, license calculations, un-allocated licences). I wonder, is it possible to implement these modules with the Asset Management app without implementing Software Asset Management? What am I missing if I only work on these modules that are part of ITAM (asset license entitlements, user license entitlements, license calculations, un-allocated licences).

Please let me know your thoughts.

Jesus,

No, you need to have some level of Software Asset Management to use those four modules under Asset Management > Software.

The two entitlements items (and Asset there is really a misnomer as it is CI-based) are related to identifying users and computers that are allocated software. You cannot use this without having Software License and Software Model records, and honestly, if you were not doing SAM in ServiceNow, you would not get a lot of value from the effort of adding this information.

License Calculations allows you to create custom ways to count software license rights in your environment. Not worthwhile unless you are using Software Counters.

Unallocated Licenses shows you what you have for license rights that are not in use or allocated.

I'm not entirely sure why we put those four items there. License Calculations at least exists under SAM as well. The others seem to me to be more useful as SAM related items.

I think these four modules were just placed there for easy access from the asset management application. That's the only reason I see so far 🙂
