Reference field is not showing display value

Reference field is not showing display value but the value is set. We have checked the display value of the table of the referenced table. Display value is set true for only one field.

I am having a similar issue . I have a custom table and a reference field that references the Customer Order number . The customer table is extended from the Order table. so similar to incident and task. 

 

But when click to populate the reference field , it comes back blank even though I can see the data in the lookup list. If I select an Order number, it seems  like it is populating it because the preview icon shows what I  selected but no value in the field itself. 

 

the Order Form is in the data Model application, the Customer Form is in the Order Management app and so is the custom form. What am I missing? this is in my pdi as admin.
