Replacing a corrupt catalog item

I updated a catalog item that works correctly in DEV. However, in TEST, although it works correctly in the UI, it does not work when accessed via the portal, and that is how our users access the catalog items. Prod has the pre-updated version of the catalog item.
We have tried, in vain, to troubleshoot and correct the issue, including trying the solutions recommended in this forum. At this point, we believe our best course of action is to recreate the catalog item from scratch to replace the current one. Our preference would be for it to have the same name it does now, so that it is transparent to the user, but I believe we will have to use a slightly different name and hide the original catalog item from the users. My questions are:
1) Is there a way that I can keep the same name that the catalog item already has if it is recreated from scratch and if so, what will I need to do in each environment to accomplish that?
2) Does anyone have any other input regarding how to proceed?
