Test variable values which are not present in dropdown using ATF

In one of my test case I have a use case where I want to test the field "state" does not show the value "in progress" in dropdown options available and can show the rest of values such as "open, cancel, close". What step I can use here?

I tried set field values and set the state to "in progress" but as we don't have assert available here it is failing my test step.

Please giude me with this.

The requirement of yours is not possible through ATF.
