I have several knowledge articles that are all in the state "Pending retirement".
I believe they're all on the approval retire workflow, but they're not moving to retire and I cannot seem to force them to retire without running a script. Some have been in this state for months, others a few weeks.
How do I force these articles in to retirement, so I can republish them with a new Valid to date?

There was a customised script that was searching for pending_retirement articles, but not pushing them to retirement. There is no UIAction on an out-of-the-box instance to move your articles to retirement.

If an article is in the Pending Retirement state then it is will require an approval to retire it. If you scroll to the bottom of the article that is pending retirement it will list any of the users that have the ability to approve in the 'Approvals' tab. Look for your name in the list and then click into the State and approve the retirement from there.

I'm confused... Do you want to Retire the articles (they are never seen again) or do you need to update the Valid To Date field (then they are visible again)?
If the latter choice, then go to the Approval section as shown by Eoghan but choose Reject to get the article back to an editable state. Then, change the Valid To Date (may have to check out in order to do so depending on your configuration) then save or re-publish.

When I retire an article, I get a task on the home page to approve it. Once approved, it goes into retirement. I then created a report for retired knowledge articles to be able to view them or reactive them. Very helpful for annual knowledge articles. I retire it, then reactive and update it for the next year event.
