Center of Excellence / Next Experience / Introduction to Next Experience UI Banner Announcements |
FYI: This article has not been updated or reviewed since the Tokyo release. Use at your discretion, but be advised that these methods may or may not work on later releases.
Next Experience banner announcements can be set on Next Experience UI to communicate events such as planned maintenance, unplanned outages, or other important events. In the following example, it has been set to inform administrators that they are on a sub-production instance rather than updating the glide.product.description system property.
The product documentation walks through creating a Banner Announcements Config record by navigating to Now Experience Framework > Configuration Settings > UX Banner Announcement Configuration, but your instance should already have a Unified Navigation record that announcements can be linked to. Users can navigate to the Banner Announcement Mapping record from there and create a new Announcement, or navigate to Now Experience Framework > Configuration Settings > UX Banner Announcements to create an announcement first, and then map it to the Unified Navigation config record.
In the example, an announcement was created informing users they were in a sub-production instance, with a start time but no end time set, and will only show for users who have the role of admin.
Upon saving the announcement record, there is an Associated to Configurations related list, that allows for the creation of a Banner Announcement Mapping record (sys_ux_m2m_banner_announcement). Navigating to the Unified Navigation Banner Announcement Config record will now display the announcement under the Banner Announcement Mapping related list.
If a user dismisses a banner announcement during a session and the announcement is still active, it will reappear once the user logs out and back in to a new session. Multiple announcements can be created and will display a badge informing the user there is more than one announcement.

Anybody figure out to make the announcement non-dismissible? We have a legal banner that has to stay up the entire session.

Upon some digging, this feature is not available. I believe there is an error in our current product documentation that I have pointed out to the team. Though I do encourage you to submit this feature request via the Idea portal.

Hi Ashley,
Just started checking out this feature. Is it only available in the landing page home and not classic?
Banner does not appear:

Hi Ashley
I created an idea: Next Experience UI: Non-dismissible Banner Announcements

If a user dismisses a banner announcement during a session and the announcement is still active, it will re-appear once the user logs out and back in to a new session.
- Is there a way to not show it anymore once user has dismissed it? Even after the logout and login to new session.

This is a huge step back from using Overview Help Panels. Please bring that functionality back so we can make user engaging announcements possible again. Banner Announcements looks like 1980's tech. Our users think they are error messages.

is there a property I need to configure to get the 'show for' working? I'd like to show an announcement to just one group, but it's showing for everyone.

@Adam43 , there is a "Roles" option - just select a role only relevant to the group you want to notify, or create a new role just for that group

Are there any plans to unify this with portal announcements? This seems like a pretty notable oversight to separate the two experiences.

@Aaron_Braun Although I agree to a degree, Portal and the UI are generally intended for two separate types of audiences. I would personally find that a notification that is required on both ends is not as common as one would think.
If anything, I would prefer if ServiceNow would stop releasing products that are more 'end-user' facing that's only accessible via the UI (Workspaces such as BCM, Asset Exec) so we can stop needing to explain to end users why they need to access two separate interfaces...
Lastly, my understanding is that Portal and UI run off of two different codebases so I would think the complexity of developing a solution that works for both is probably not worth the effort 🤷

I'm looking at changing the colour of the unified announcement banner. I understand you can select between various options, but I need to create a bespoke one. On a cursory look, the colour options are simply choices on the choice table. Has anyone created a new one?
I'm sure it will be simple. Just thought I'd ask here before I go down the rabbit hole to find out how.

Would also like to know if once a user dismisses a banner, how to prevent it from re-appearing in their next session. Once they dismiss it once, they don't want to see it again in current session nor future session.

Oh I totally misread your question. I do not think there is any out of box functionality that allows for that at the moment. Definitely does feel like an oversight to a degree 👎. Upvote the idea if you'd like to see it OOB!

I understand this has not been updated in a while, but hoping you might be able to help me. I am hoping to create a Banner Announcements Config record to make the Announcements visible only in a particular Workspace, but I am not able to track down any documentation on how to do it. This is the only article I have found that mentions product documentation on this, so I was hoping you might be able to share some insight. I recall doing this a few years ago, so it might be that the documentation was moved or re-named?
Thank you,
Dustin

I saw this article about it on another post: Announcement banner for Workspace.

Well, the update didn't have the 'show once' option I was looking for. Instead, they allow it to be permanent until the End date. I guess my option would require a user preference setting, likely for each banner which could get out of hand if your banner usage is high.
