Discovery related question

Hi Folks,

1. What are the prerequisites for discovery?
2. How do I remove a certain CI and asset?
3. How may data from an asset and CI be synchronised?
4. In the event that any problems are discovered, where should I look?
5. Where should I look if there are any problems with the MID server?

Anyone can help me out of those question please.

Thanks,

Mustafeez.

Hi @Mustafeez,

You'll need to engage a few people on the first step, first make sure of everything that you want to onboard on your CMDB e.g. Switches, Routers, Veloclouds, UPSs, Firewalls, Servers (Linux, Windows), Workstations, Azure, AWS...

Whenever you have that list, start engaging your Infrastructure, Network, and InfoSec teams to get credentials for you. I'd say that is the hardest part of the implementation.

You'll need to put together the IP Ranges that you'll scan, so you can create the Discovery Schedules.

Make sure to have at least 1 mid-server dedicated to Discovery in each instance, and I'd put some load-balancing rules on prod servers

You'll eventually test the credentials and see the classic 'Authentication Failed' that's where you start troubleshooting it, re-enter the credentials, or call InfoSec to look at the activity on firewalls if it's being allowed, blocked, or aged...

MID Server problems are not a big deal unless you have not installed it incorrectly. If ever your MID Server gets a Down status you'll need to check where the mid server has installed in the Services section, see if it's running or not, and give it a restart.

The sync between CI and asset is seamless, there are a few CI classes that create assets automatically and if you ever happen to have discovery schedules set up you don't need to worry.

Dear @Mustafeez ,

Here are your answers:

1. What are the prerequisites for discovery?

I have created a clear article on what will be a pre-req for discovery implementation for any infra you can refer this below.

Servicenow Discovery Implementaion Requirement Gathering & Pre-requisites.

2. How do I remove a certain CI and asset?

CI removal has its own process in place we're you can remidate and decided if the CI can be marked retired or non operational. Deletion of CI or asserts are not highly recommend (consider setting the states to non operational or retired ) they will no more be part of your active search.

3. How may data from an asset and CI be synchronised?

Almost all your infra can be discoverd and sync to servicenow cmdbm. There are 5 business rules on cmdb & assets table which takes care of data sync..

4. In the event that any problems are discovered, where should I look?

You can go to Discovery log or  Ecc queue logs. ( Go to discovery status module and open the associated discovery run and in the realted list you can see the logs of the discovery run)

5. Where should I look if there are any problems with the MID server?

Open the mid server record for which you wanna observer logs. In the related list you will see logs. ( You can also pull the latest log by clicking on get logs in realted link)

Other way is you can login to mid server and go to mid server folder were you will be able to see a agent.log file..

I hope this helps.... 🙂
