One of my colleagues pointed out that the dot replaces the blue "i" icon which is used to preview the record when we open a table in list view. It is done via the view "sys_ref_list" and the purpose is that the users should not be able to preview a record while they are selecting it to fill out a value on another form.
So, in short, the 'i' icon gets replaced by the dot.
