External Content Indexed but Not Accessible to NowAssist

I have uploaded several documents as external content to an indexed source using the ServiceNow external-content-ingestion API , and, as required, the corresponding search source has been properly associated. This search source has then been linked to a virtual assistant (NowAssist) available within ESC portal.
The issue I am experiencing is the following: although the uploaded documents are accessible via AI Search, NowAssist, even when using its Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) capabilities, is unable to retrieve this content in order to formulate responses.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue or can suggest what might be missing in the configuration?
