Did you receive any training when you started out in Performance Analytics?  Were you thrown right into the fire and learned on your own?  This is still too common.  Some great work has come out of people just like yourself that have learned on the go within the Platform but thinks about how much better and faster you can deliver value if you had a better understanding of all the capabilities Performance Analytics has to offer. 

I like to call myself a Veteran Performance Analytics Developer (3 years), and even with that experience, I still learned things by attending the Performance Analytics Fundamentals Training.  

Here are a few things that I gained a better understanding of from the Performance Analytics Fundamentals training that I wish I had known when I started.  

 

  • Use Content Packs to Deliver Immediate Value 
     
    Have you ever investigated the amount of content that has already been created for Performance Analytics in ServiceNow or have you been re-creating the wheel? When I first started with Performance Analytics, we created so much content that now I find out was already existed.  Did we need to modify or tweak? Yes… but we really could have used some things that were already created in Content Packs.  Do your research before you spend a lot of time creating new Analytics.  Utilize the OOTB Content Packs to understand how to build Performance Analytics.  Click here for more information on what is out there as it relates to Performance Analytics Content Packs.

  • Understand Your Stakeholders 
     
    Who are you building for?  Do you know?  Do you think that it is a one size fits all Dashboard?

    Knowing who and what your stakeholders’ needs are will help you when you start out.  Knowing the Performance Analytics Stakeholders will help you during your development process.

  • The Power of Analytics Hub 

    Please, do not try and create what you already get in the Analytics Hub that is Out of the Box in Performance Analytics. The Analytics Hub is a very powerful feature that you can gain many insights into your data with.  The training that you get around the Analytics Hub is priceless. 
  • Tuning your Data Collection 

    Are you collecting data for your Indicators the most efficient way?  Are your jobs too large, do you have redundancy? Overall System Performance should always be on your mind when you are creating jobs to collect data.  Performance Analytics Fundamentals can give you more insight on best practices as it relates to Jobs. 
  • The Magic of Wizards 

    I know, I know…I don’t need any stinking Wizard, I am a Guru!!! I am a Guru too, and I found some great insight in when I should use a Wizard and when I should not.  Wizards may put you in a better position to know and understand the whole process of creation when it comes to Dashboards, Widgets, Indicators and Indicator Sources amongst other things as well. 
  • Smart Way to Manage your Breakdown Matrix 

    Having the ability to see what should be added to Breakdown Exclusions has great value. This tool has a great feature putting values into a Heat Map so you can then determine which Breakdown Exclusions would bring the best value to add.

If you can find a way to attend Performance Analytics Fundamentals and then Performance Analytics Advanced, I would highly recommend it.  As someone that has been a developer in Performance Analytics for more than 3 years, I found the training incredibly valuable.  Talk to your Management and see if you can secure this training ASAP and leverage what you learn to take your Performance Analytics to the Next Level!!!
