Adding variables for columns in a simple list data visualization

When creating a simple list data visualization and I want to use variables from a catalog item for some of the columns, however the UI experience is terrible.  I am hopeful that this is just a user error on my part.

I have created a simple list data vis on the sc_task table and clicked variables in the 'columns to add'.
When I click variables, I am presented with a list of EVERY variable in our catalog and cannot find a way to choose which specific catalog item that I want to select the variables from.  (In legacy reports, we could write a query to only show the variables for a specific catalog item)

Hopefully this is user error on my part!  Please advise

I have been struggling with simple reports and agree with your opinion that the user experience is terrible.  It's not at parity with features in report builder.  It requires many more clicks to do simple things.  I get lists of results that are not related to my query unless I hit Save, which I don't always want to do especially if I don't like the results on the screen.  My report is similar to yours in that I wanted to show Requested Item records created from a single day, but cannot get the variable fields to appear.  The same report on the Report Builder took me 5 minutes.  I get that new is different and that there is a learning curve, but we are talking internally about how to block Platform Analytics from being available to agents as this will cause more incidents, rather than less.

I am facing the same issue and it is a pity a simple list view with catalog item variables cannot be created without workarounds. There must be a fix!?
