Saving filter in a dashboards to the library or the dashboard

I have placed a filter on a dashboard and then go to save my dashboard. I am advised that I made changes to the filter (I think just because I added it to the dashboard and resized it by one gridline to the right) and am prompted whether I want to "Save changes only for this dashboard" or "Save changes to library". I don't want to have accidentally overwritten anything in the library, I just wanted to add the filter to my dashboard and resize it. However, if I save as "Save changes only for this dashboard", if I make improvements to the filter dot-walk paths later, the version of the filter on this dashboard does not get the improvements. Should I select "Save changes to library" instead, and if so why am I changing the version of the filter in the library just by adding it to a dashboard and resizing?

I've also noticed that saving changes to the library has been super slow / not working at all. I'll click on the confirm button and then nothing happens. Has anyone else run into this?

Also, if you have saved to the library in the past, how can you sync back up to the library again?

Then your workflow should be to add the filter from the library instead of creating a new one on your dashboard. However, if you later unlink that filter from the library and make local changes, you can never sync changes made in the library back down to your unique local copy.
The prompt when you haven't changed anything sounds like a familiar bug, please check with Technical Support.

Saving to the library means that you are saving it for every dashboard that uses the library component (could be a filter or a visualization or whatever). If you want to adjust anything on something you already saved to the library, you open it from there and make the adjustments (or use 'save to library' after adjusting it from the dashboard.

Thank you for the reply! My concern though, is that if I save to the library after having initially saved to dashboard, I will be pushing my changes up to the library, rather syncing changes from the library back down to my filter after re-linking. Additionally, I'm concerned that I'm being prompted whether I want to save my changes to the library after just adding the filter to my dashboard and making no intentional changes.

Sounds good, thank you for that clarification that once unlinked from the library, they are never resynced back, but would instead need to be removed and added to get back in sync.

I think I'm also bumping into PRB1877536, which is making it hard to save to the library. I'll watch for a resolution on that open ticket. Thanks again for the quick replies!
