Video on the feature:
Details:
SAM Virtualization Adapter is a patent pending feature released on ServiceNow SAM- San Diego Release. To read ServiceNow docs, please click here.
The feature provides a common framework that helps customers reconcile software licensing rules on different virtualization technologies.
The number of virtualization technologies are growing. In fact, The Virtualization Software Market was valued at €51.72 billion in 2020, and is expected to reach €99.33 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 11.5% during the forecast period of 2021-2026.
Customers have multiple virtualization technologies in their environment, and these virtualization technologies have virtual machines having software deployed on them.
It is important for a SAM product to determine the correct license compliance position for these software(s) deployed, however because of differences in architecture of these virtualization technologies, Discovery solutions like ServiceNow Discovery, discover them with different architectural relationships.
For example, notice that the different virtualization technologies like VMware, Hyper-V and Red hat virtualization are discovered so differently on the CMDB owing to their different architectures.
Hence, a Software asset management solution needs to have a capability that can reconcile the disparate relationships discovered on the CMDB, and thereby determine the correct license compliance position. This is exactly what SAM Virtualization Adapter does!
In summary, SAM Virtualization adapter helps in the following:
- Abstraction to different virtualization technologies and enable SAM to reconcile different software installed on them
- Support License Compliance and Optimization for Software Deployed on different virtualization technologies
SAM Pro considers the architecture of the virtualization technology while applying the licensing rules.
For example, Microsoft Hyper-V architecture permits Windows Server Standard edition to use one running instance of the server software in the physical OSE on the licensed server in addition to two virtual OSEs if the physical OSE is used only to host and manage the virtual OSEs.
Software Asset Management Virtualization Adapter automatically applies this rule set.
Currently, the virtualization technologies supported by Software Asset Management are:
- VMware
- Microsoft Hyper-V
- Red Hat
Support for more virtualization technologies will be added in the coming releases.
