Costs, costs and costs

Hi all I am looking for guidance on the behaviour of SAMP and the consequences of entering a cost in specific locations. As license cost is so fundamental to the ELP and management of software, I would hope SN has allowed for all the way different costs are used.

  • Does entering a cost to the software model override the average cost used via entitlement costs?
  • How does the functionality/calculation differ from entering a cost in the software model and applying an overriding cost?
  • When is it best to use each option?
  • How to apply a true up cost when the version installed is no longer available. So to true up you need to buy the latest version at a different price.  E.g. You have 10 licences for v1 at £10 each and 20 installations. Only v4 is available now at £50 each.  How do I show the true up cost is £500 rather than £100?
  • Discovered software without entitlement (Risk).  How do I apply a cost to show the cost to resolve the issue? Basically, show true up cost when there is no entitlement.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @andynewey

  • Does entering a cost to the software model override the average cost used via entitlement costs?

Answer: Yes

  • How does the functionality/calculation differ from entering a cost in the software model and applying an overriding cost?

Answer: Only the input costs value is different (avg price vs. overriding costs) calculations is still the same

  • When is it best to use each option?

Answer: In case of a spread between the price of entitlements (older, newer) - customer sometimes decide to use the latest costs overall entitlement, as a renewal is often based on the latest price so true up costs are more accurate

Answer: similar case as mentioned above, I would use the latest as overwritten price to reflect the current costs of new licenses.

  • Discovered software without entitlement (Risk).  How do I apply a cost to show the cost to resolve the issue? Basically, show true up cost when there is no entitlement.

Answer: Not possible, you need a dummy entitlement etc., as software model results are based on entitlements, installs, usage and the license metrics.

Hey Dennis - for the last question, if I added a cost to the software model or an over-riding cost, would this not show the true-up cost or does the software model need entitlements linked for a true-up cost to be calculated? I do use dummy entitlements, but not for this purpose.
