Differentiating server software vs. cloud/SaaS in ServiceNow SAM — is there a built in way?

Hi everyone,

I'm working with a client to update and maintain accurate software models in ServiceNow SAM. We need a way to differentiate server-based software from cloud/SaaS deployments to ensure the correct installation and discovery processes are applied, support accurate categorization, and aid in license compliance and reconciliation.

We're currently on Zurich but plan to upgrade to the latest release, so solutions applicable to either are welcome.

A few specific questions:

  1. Is there a native SAM field or attribute on the Software Model record that distinguishes server software from cloud/SaaS?
  2. Is there a setting or SAM Pro feature that enables this?
  3. If not natively supported, what's the recommended approach — custom fields, classification scripts, or something else?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hi @sabbadi,

Yes, the License Type field on the Software Entitlement is actually the native differentiator you’re looking for, and it directly impacts how SAM Pro reconciliation handles the software.

The OOB license types already cover your server vs. SaaS split:

- Perpetual / Perpetual + Maintenance / Perpetual + SA → on-premise/server software

- Subscription → SaaS or subscription-based cloud licensing
