SAM Pro discovering browser‑based apps/extensions as installed software

Hi All,

We are currently facing an issue in SAM Pro where software installations are being discovered under web browsers. During discovery, products such as Udemy, YouTube, Viva Engage, and Outlook are being identified as installed software.

The concern is that these discoveries are getting normalized under their respective publishers, even though they are actually browser‑based applications or extensions, not standalone installed software.
We need guidance on how to handle or correct this behavior so that browser applications/extensions are not treated as installed software for normalization and compliance purposes.

Thank you in advance!

Microsoft calls them progressive web apps (Install, manage, or uninstall apps in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support), Google calls them web apps (Use web apps - Computer - Google Chrome Help) . Basically, it is taking commonly used websites and making them look like regularly installed apps (Windows will show them under Installed Apps \ Add Remove Programs).

Seems like most discovery tools are tricked by this. Google makes it a little easier as the Publisher is always Google Chrome. So, if you have the ability to customize the discover source or the ingest transform you can ignore them.  I am still trying to figure out what to do with the MS Edge created web apps.

Thank you for the explanation.

I have one follow‑up question. As you mentioned, we can customize the discovery source or use pattern normalization rules to fix this. However, is there any possibility to have it automatically normalized, similar to how normal applications are normalized using ServiceNow Content Library?

Thank you again!
