There is a field in the Software Model table labeled Software Category. The Product documentation's description is "a category name for grouping software with similar characteristics." I am trying to understand the purpose of this field. I know its not the same as the software model category. How is it used? Is it associated with the Application Portfolio Management application?

Hi Princess,
As the definition stated; "a category name for grouping software with similar characteristics."
So let's take the category "Word Processing" as an example. The types of software that fall into this category will be Google Docs, Microsoft Word, WordPad, and Notepad.
Presentation Software: Google Slides, Microsoft Powerpoint, Keynotes, Prezzy
Multimedia: Media Player, Winamp, QuickTime, and VLC Media Player
Database Software: MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Oracle, IBM DB2, and FoxPro.
These are some examples of software categories.
This is good to track mostly from a financial standpoint, for example, an organization might want to compile a list of all applications that fall under the "multimedia" category so they can consolidate and streamline their spending by settling for one of the apps and blacklisting the others.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response. What is the benefits of using the software category field versus using the product classification and UNSPSC from the content library?

The hint text from ServiceNow is better than the docs site on this field. User-customizable field for storing software categorization information. I think this field existed before SAMPro and the content library that brought the product classification/unspsc classification field onto the software model form.
