Using the Most Recent Discovered - vs - the Updated dates for Archiving

HI ITAM folks,

We are going through the process of archiving older CI's.  I've noticed the CMDB team seems to be using the 'Most Recent Discovered' date, which leaves a good deal of systems in place, where the 'Updated' date might be many months or years previous.   It's especially evident when the Most recent discovery date is (empty).   Some of these old CIs don't have any software installed or might only show the OS and seem to be orphan records.

It appears we need to update our archiving rule to also include the older dates listed in Updated, when the Most recent discovery is empty or blank.   Before I send this over as a change request, I thought it worth asking the community for input.   Is there a suggested workflow of checking various Dates, Installed, Status, Operational status and other fields, to give an encompassing 'best practices' for archiving CIs and keeping data current and as clean possible?

I had seen an article or 2 some time ago, where they suggested using the Updated date, indicating it was more accurate than the Most recent discovery date, but I can't seem to find that post anymore.

Thanks very much for your consideration and input.
