Career Transition from HR to ServiceNow Admin/Developer – Need Guidance

Hello everyone,

I have 7 years of experience in Human Resources, and I have recently decided to transition my career into ServiceNow. I am currently learning ServiceNow and plan to start my career as a ServiceNow Administrator, with the goal of becoming a ServiceNow Developer in the future.

I would appreciate your guidance on a few questions:

  1. How can I present my 7 years of HR experience on my resume so that it adds value to my ServiceNow profile instead of making me look like I'm changing careers completely?

  2. Since I am not interested in ServiceNow HRSD (HR Service Delivery) roles, how can I position myself for ServiceNow Admin opportunities instead?

  3. As someone with no professional ServiceNow experience, will companies consider me for entry-level or fresher ServiceNow Admin roles despite my overall 7 years of work experience?

  4. What skills, certifications, or projects would you recommend to improve my chances of getting my first ServiceNow Admin job?

  5. Should I remove or minimize my HR experience on my resume, or should I highlight transferable skills such as process improvement, stakeholder management, documentation, and problem-solving?

  6. Also, suggest how can i format my resume ?

I would be grateful if anyone who has successfully transitioned from a non-IT background to ServiceNow could share their experience, challenges, and advice.

I think 3, is the main deciding factor here. Most companies expect you to have atleast basic understanding of the ServiceNow platform(Admin) preferrably having ServiceNow CSA certification. 
Without that will companies consider me for entry-level or fresher ServiceNow Admin roles despite my overall 7 years of work experience? I would say NO, As I've seen my friends struggle in the same path. 

I would say start with Admin certification, then followed by CAD which gives you full understanding of SNOW as a platform & yes you can do 5 to minimize HR Experience & portray it as SNOW one after getting hands on.

I'm happy to see that you're moving forward, but since you still have some doubts, let me answer them from my perspective as a trainer and someone who has worked in the ServiceNow ecosystem.

1. How can I present my 7 years of HR experience on my resume so that it adds value to my ServiceNow profile instead of making me look like I'm changing careers completely?

Atul:

I'll be completely honest here. Your HR experience is in a different domain and is not directly related to ServiceNow or IT. From a hiring perspective, your previous experience won't be counted as ServiceNow experience, so you'll largely be considered a fresher in the ServiceNow ecosystem.

However, your HR background is not wasted. It has given you valuable transferable skills such as:

  • Stakeholder management
  • Communication
  • Documentation
  • Process understanding
  • Handling business issues and user expectations

These skills are extremely valuable, especially if you later move into roles such as Business Analyst (BA), Business Process Consultant (BPC), or Solution Consultant.


2. Since I am not interested in ServiceNow HRSD roles, how can I position myself for ServiceNow Admin opportunities instead?

Atul:

I understand your point. While HRSD would naturally complement your HR background, it's perfectly fine if you're not interested in it.

My suggestion is to start with an Admin role if you get the opportunity. However, based on the current market, there are very few pure Admin roles available. Most companies expect candidates to understand the platform beyond administration.

Instead of focusing only on Admin, build knowledge in one or two functional areas such as:

  • ITSM (highly recommended)
  • HRSD (even if you don't want to work in it, understanding it is beneficial)

The broader your platform knowledge, the better your chances of getting shortlisted.


3. As someone with no professional ServiceNow experience, will companies consider me for entry-level or fresher ServiceNow Admin roles despite my overall 7 years of work experience?

Atul:

It will be challenging—but definitely not impossible.

One thing to consider is that although you have seven years of overall work experience, entering ServiceNow as a fresher may require compromising on either:

  • Your initial salary, or
  • Your designation.

Companies may hesitate unless your resume clearly demonstrates strong ServiceNow knowledge through:

  • Hands-on projects
  • Personal Developer Instance (PDI) work
  • Portfolio projects
  • Community contributions
  • Certifications (where appropriate)

Your goal should be to convince recruiters that although you're new professionally, you've invested significant time learning the platform.


4. What skills, certifications, or projects would you recommend to improve my chances of getting my first ServiceNow Admin job?

Atul:

Knowledge comes first.

I'm not against certifications, but I don't believe certifications alone get you a job. They certainly add value later, but practical knowledge is far more important.

I would recommend:

  • Build strong platform fundamentals.
  • Spend plenty of time working in a Personal Developer Instance (PDI).
  • Create small end-to-end projects.
  • Participate in the ServiceNow Community by answering questions.
  • Share your learning journey on LinkedIn.
  • Write short blogs or posts about what you're learning.

These activities improve both your knowledge and your professional visibility.


5. Should I remove or minimize my HR experience on my resume, or should I highlight transferable skills such as process improvement, stakeholder management, documentation, and problem-solving?

Atul:

I would not recommend removing your HR experience.

If you minimize it too much, there will be a large gap in your resume, and you don't yet have equivalent ServiceNow experience to replace it.

Instead:

  • Keep your HR experience.
  • Highlight transferable skills.
  • Add a professional summary explaining that you're transitioning into the ServiceNow ecosystem.
  • Include your ServiceNow training, certifications, personal projects, and community contributions.

This creates a much stronger story than pretending your HR experience doesn't exist.


6. Also, suggest how I should format my resume.

Atul:

Resume formatting is important, but it comes later.

Right now, your priority should be:

  1. Learning the platform.
  2. Building practical knowledge.
  3. Completing projects.
  4. Gaining confidence.

Once you've built a solid ServiceNow portfolio, we can work together on structuring your resume to effectively showcase both your previous HR experience and your new ServiceNow skills.

Remember, transitioning into ServiceNow is a journey. Focus on learning consistently, building hands-on experience, and demonstrating your knowledge through projects and community involvement. Those efforts will make a much bigger difference than simply changing the format of your resume.

 As you are from HR background, , interested to join Servicenow

I will suggest you to  first complete "Welcome to ServiceNow " course ,so that you can navigate smoothly within the tool. CSA will give you Admin confidence.

If you are not interested in HRSD then choose your path  in Servicenow Univerity Provided Career Journey path. 

 

1. If you want to work as Administrator /production support , then definitely 

2. If you want to become BA

3. If you want to work as ITSM analyst where you will work on Incident, Change,Problem , report dashboard, platform Analytics, (Want to join ITSM team/MIM team/SLM team)

4. If you want to become developer ,

5. If you want to work as Implementation specialist, Choose in which module you want to become Implementer. Choose your interested  Career journey Path .

 

6. If you want to become Tester , 

  •    Go through the course testing related specifically ATF
