Search for keywords to bring up catalog item on search drop down in portal

Hi All,

Client has a question about a catalog item. They want keyword meta tags eg: #tree #apple# that dont have the same wording as the catalog item eg: 'linux server req' to make the catalog item come up in the search dropdown on the service portal.

Is this something that is possible? I tried adding the meta tag words to the short description and i index record for meta, I put not_searachable and value to false. I reindexed and it doesnt seem to have worked..

Short description is already indexed.

The behavior depends on which search engine your Service Portal is using (Zing Search, AI Search, or Employee Center Search).

For the standard Service Portal search, Meta Tags are not used as searchable keywords for catalog items. Even if you add values to the Meta field and reindex, those values are generally not considered during catalog item search.

Some alternatives are:

1. Search Keywords (Recommended):

   • If available in your instance, use the Search Keywords related list on the catalog item and add synonyms such as:

     • tree

     • apple

     • linux

     • server

   • Reindex the catalog item after adding the keywords.

2. Short Description / Description

   • Include relevant synonyms naturally in the Description or Search Keywords rather than relying on Meta Tags.

3. AI Search / Employee Center

   • If you're using AI Search, configure synonyms in AI Search instead of modifying catalog item metadata. This is the preferred approach for handling alternative search terms.

4. Custom Solution

   • If none of the above meets the requirement, you can customize the search source or indexing logic to include additional keyword fields for catalog items.

In short, Meta Tags alone are not intended to act as search aliases for catalog items in Service Portal, so reindexing them will typically not produce the desired search results. The recommended approach is to use Search Keywords (if available) or AI Search synonyms, depending on your search implementation.
