Keyword or global search on request item variables

I wanted to confirm that keyword searching or using the global search should work on request item variable fields.
I have a user who said that it did work, but stopped working recently. I thought that it did as well. I did recently enable searching of incident attachments by updating the the attribute for the incident table as shown here and generated Text Index on the incident table but i'm not positive that the issue is related. http://wiki.servicenow.com/index.php?title=Enabling_Attachment_Indexing#gsc.tab=0
I do have the sc_req_item and sc_task tables setup in my Search Groups with no conditions within "Tasks". That hasn't changed.
I am currently on Fuji patch 13.

As long as you have the sc_req_item table included in your global search group then data in variables should be found. As a note, testing an out of the box instance (Istanbul), sc_request and sc_task are included in the search, but not sc_req_item.
