comment and worknote filter search

Is it by design that I cannot add the Additional Comments [comments] or Work Notes [work_notes] fields to the filter panel in the Workspace UI? If this is by design, how do you all search for comments and work notes instead?
I was thinking of exporting the data to Excel and searching there, but are there any other alternatives?
Is the global search not recommended because it is not supported by the system?

could you possibly add some context - what workspace and what table/list are you talking about?
I tried in my Service Operation Workspace (SOW) for incidents and found both fields:
But if you add these fields, you will always see only the latest added comment/worknote.
So perhaps what could work better for oyu is table called Journal Entries [sys_journal_field], you can access it here: https://yourinstance.service-now.com/sys_journal_field_list.do
In this table you can filter by Name (table, e.g. Incident), Element (Additional comment, Work note or both), Element ID (sys ID of that record, not incident number but sys ID), Value (the actual content of AC/WN), Created (date and time) and Created by (particular, admin or system).
