ServiceNow® App Engine and IntegrationHub together support ServiceNow’s Creator Workflows
. Creator Workflows provide organizations a strategic low-code platform to deliver workflow automation with a consumer-grade user experience, enable siloed systems to work together, and create more efficient and productive ways to get work done. In the Rome release this fall, there are new capabilities and features that make these benefits even greater for your business.

App Engine Studio enhancements

In the Rome release, App Engine Studio enhancements will help organizations continue to scale low-code adoption and setup successful citizen development programs with brand-new collaboration, governance, and foundational features.

Low-code is powerful because developers of all skill levels can participate and build apps together. With the Rome release, App Engine Studio now has built-in collaboration features that give developers the ability to work better together, improving team collaboration. Creators can invite one another into their instance for joint development—without code collision due to a Source Control integration—increasing the speed as well as the joy of application development.

App Engine Studio provides platform owners and admins the governance tools, processes, and best practices they need to setup a successful citizen development program, while also helping to providing safe and scalable development. With App Engine Studio expanded support for Delegated Development, admins have defined control over what resources developers can access as well as what they can do in their environment. Take for example the new collaboration feature; admins now have a seamless way to configure and apply standard sets of app collaboration descriptors to developers. These are easy to maintain, persona-based collections of Delegated Development permissions. Additionally, admins now have complete oversight into who is being added into an application for joint development—with the option to approve or deny requests—therefore never losing visibility and control. Overall, new governance features help build trust with admins that successful citizen development programs can be launched, while keeping the platform safe.

Mobile development is also enhanced within App Engine Studio with the fully revamped Mobile Wizardproviding more in-depth customization for mobile experiences right out of the gate. This new wizard helps developers build production-ready mobile front-ends for their custom apps.

The last big App Engine Studio foundational enhancement in the Rome release is the introduction of Source Control. App Engine Studio support for Source Control allows admins to benefit from more sophisticated version control capabilities and improved application authoring capabilities. This accelerates development without sacrificing data integrity.

Mobile App Builder

Mobile App Builder is a next generation, all-encompassing mobile developer tool. It enables developers to build and configure mobile apps with deep functionality and guided experiences in a single intuitive interface. Mobile App Builder as a standalone release in the ServiceNow Store is not chargeable, but it will require an App Engine license for native integration with App Engine Studio.

Flow Designer Error Handling

Flow Designer Error Handling automates notifications and remediation of flow errors to keep work flowing. Before when a flow encountered an error, it would stop abruptly. As a result, workflows stalled, the error was only discovered when the end-user reported a delay, and thus admins received urgent, unplanned work to investigate, triage, and respond to. Error Handling makes this process much more seamless. Developers can define actions, logic, or subflows to run whenever an error occurs. This improves uptime by having flows in place to proactively respond to errors as they happen, resulting in fewer IT tickets, less emergency action by admins, and smoother workflows across the enterprise. Error Handling empowers business users with low-code flow components built for reuse, in turn automating flows and accelerating IT development.

Pro-developer enhancements

We continue to invest in pro-developer productivity in the Rome release, starting with Source Control. Source Control has been available for global apps, scoped apps, and Store apps. In the Rome release, we have expanded Source Control to support plugin-based apps—such as those in Customer Service Management and HR Service Delivery—so developers can replace update sets with a modern, standardized source control system.

There is also a pro-developer enhancement for automated testing. Previously, developers couldn’t fully automate browser-based tests. Manually fired tests may have timed out, which led to delays in testing and releasing apps. In the Rome release, we’re adding support for headless Automated Test Framework (ATF) tests using a Docker image so client-side testing can be automated and scheduled. This improves the effectiveness and efficiency of the testing process.

The last big pro-developer enhancement is ServiceNow Command Line Interface (CLI) which provides a single command-line interface to integrate command-line processes with ServiceNow instances. It was initially available in the Quebec release for building custom components. The full version now includes support for Create/Read/Update/Delete and user-created commands. With ServiceNow CLI, developers can programmatically interact with ServiceNow instances, extending with their own command groups and commands for more automation.
