Knowledge Article URL changes

Everytime I update a Knowledge Article the URL changes. This means I need to update the URL in several places. I thought the purpose of document management was to make things easier. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong during the update.
These are the steps I'm taking when updating a Knowledge Article:
1) Checkout
2) Replace file
3) Publish
Any thoughts?
