What if a reference field shows sys_id instead of records?

I have a reference field in a catalog form. The reference field look upon a table (custom table). The look up lists sys_id instead of records from the custom table. Any reason?

I was struggling for the same issue, To get the desired value when you click the magnifying glass. When you click the magnifying glass the table will popup now right click the column and open configure ->Layout and you will see the Sys Id in column list, remove the Sys_Id and select the desired column and save. Now refresh and click the magnifying glass you will see the desired column values.
