Project Portfolio Management - Planning Console Issues

Hi Community,

Problem:
Highly Impacting Performance Issues in Planning Console

Context:
We have successfully implemented Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) (former IT Business Management) product in several Clients in different geographies.
Although each Client, depending on their area of activity, market and geography, has different needs, they all end up reporting the same problems within this product: poor performance at the Planning Console level.
As the instantiated Projects start to grow - as soon as they reach a few dozens Project Tasks lines - performance issues start to arise.
Due to common requirements for our Clients, and in order avoid the risk of losing unsaved plan changes (manually), we decided to activate the automatic "Save" option.
Unfortunately, this automatic "Save" created several performance issues during Project plan updates, with several users reporting wait times for each update of several seconds (sometimes beyond 1 minute).

ServiceNow reported (allegedly) significant improvements to overcome these issues in the Rome version. However, our Customers continue to report the same poor performance levels in the Planning Console.

Solution/ Workaround:
Is anyone else encountering/encountered problems like this in the past?
What solutions/workarounds have you identified to overcome these issues?
Suggestions are welcome, as we have already made a significant effort to try to overcome these issues, however, without success.

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,

Fábio Gonçalves

Hello Fábio,

Were you able to have a look on System Diagnostics > Stats > Slow Queries in order to check if there are some slow queries identified on top of the Project and project task tables?
If there are slow queries identified by the system, you might need to use the "Suggest Index" option to get an index created to speed up the queries.

Hope this helps!

Hello Filipe,

Thank you for your reply.
I will for sure follow your suggestion!

I will let you know once I get to some conclusions.

Hi @Fábio Gonçalves ,

Starting San Diego release this issue has been addressed with the help of New Project Workspace (NPW) v1. This is a store app and can be downloaded from ServiceNow store.

NPW v1 provides a better UI and UX experience with performance-enhanced scheduling, task drag & drop, bulk edits, and copy & paste.

FYI, the performance is planned to be enhanced more in the next version of NPW i.e. NPW v2 which is planned (Note: Plan may change) to be released as a store app in May 2022. NPW v2 will support large projects and performance will also be better as compared to v1.

NPW v1 details can be found using the doc link.

Please mark this response as correct / helpful if the query is answered.

Hi Namita,

Really appreciate them time you puted in your reply.
Following what you shared, I successfully managed to upgrade a non-production instance to the new San Diego release and installed and tested the New Project Workspace (NPW) v1 you referred to.

This new Workspace looks really great and the performance is surprisingly increased when compared with the classic Planning Console.

Unfortunately, this new Workspace was created using the new Now Experience Framework, which causes the screen to be isolated from the traditional view. For example, when accessing the new Workspace we lose the context of the Menu/Navigator on the left side panel, which will certainly introduce a radical change in the way the end user interacts and navigates.

That being said, it does not seems that we will be able to move forward here at this stage.

Thanks for sharing!
