Renaming OOTB admin account

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has experience with renaming the default OOTB administrator account in a production instance.
Our security analyst gives us a list of recommendations on how to make our instance more secure, and this was one of the points. I've tried renaming this account in PDI and there seems to be no problem, but I'd like to get input from someone who has longer and deeper experience.

Regards,

Milan

Hi @Milan11 ,

Hope you are doing great.
Renaming the default OOTB administrator account in a production instance is a great way to increase security. However, it is important to take certain precautions when doing so. Before you begin, make sure that you have a backup of your instance and that you understand the implications of changing the administrator account name. Additionally, you should ensure that all users are aware of the change and that their access rights remain intact.

Once you have taken these steps, you can begin the process of renaming the default administrator account. The first step is to log into your instance and navigate to the Administration tab. Once there, select the “Users” option and then select the “Administrator” user. On this page, you will be able to change the name of the administrator account. Make sure that you use a strong password and that you save your changes. It is also

important to note that after you have changed the name of the administrator account, you will need to update any scripts or applications that rely on this account. Additionally, if your instance is integrated with an Active Directory or other authentication system, you will need to update these systems as well. Finally, it is important to keep in mind that renaming the default administrator account is only one step in making your instance more secure. You should also consider implementing additional security measures such as two-factor authentication, user access control, and regular security audits.

Hi @Milan11 ,

I haven't tried it but I also don't see how would this provide any improvement in terms of security. You get better security instead by enabling MFA.

But you can confirm with https://support.servicenow.com/ if this is feasible.

Please mark correct/helpful is this helped your concern.
