What skills should a new ServiceNow System Administrator focus on?

JacquelineRed

I'm currently learning ServiceNow and am especially interested in the System Administrator career path. For those of you who work with ServiceNow professionally, what skills or areas of the platform would you recommend a beginner focus on beyond the fundamentals? Are there any skills you wish you had spent more time learning when you first started?

Hi @JacquelineRed

Being a ServiceNow trainer, I’m happy to share my thoughts here.

You are definitely on the right track. Just to add, ServiceNow is getting deeper, wider and bigger, so the starting point for anyone entering the ServiceNow ecosystem is generally the same — CSA.

This course/certification will give you the right direction and help you understand the platform, its core components, terminology, architecture and how everything fits together.

I would also say that CSA is just the starting point. Once you complete it, you can decide which direction you want to take — whether it’s Development, Business Analysis, Administration, or another ServiceNow career path.

I would also recommend learning a little about ITIL, as ITIL processes will be an important foundation for working with ServiceNow.

If you are completely new to development, I would also suggest learning some JavaScript and scripting fundamentals. I would personally start my ServiceNow career with the Developer path and then explore other areas as you gain experience.

I’ll share a few useful links here as well. Once you complete CSA, there are several micro-certifications that can help strengthen your foundation, build your profile and support your move into the job market.

Hi @JacquelineRed

Here are a few tips:

  1. Follow this master playlist to strengthen your JavaScript skills specifically for the ServiceNow platform.

 Hands on  https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/learn/courses/australia/app_store_learnv2_scripting_austra...

  1. Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.

  1. Explore the free courses available on the ServiceNow Developer Site. These are practical and focused, and will help you apply your knowledge directly on the platform.

Hi @JacquelineRed

Beyond fundamentals, focus on:

• ACLs (access control debugging)

• Flow Designer (not the old Workflow Editor)

• Basic scripting: Business Rules, Script Includes, GlideRecord/GlideQuery

• Update Set management across dev/test/prod

I strongly suggest focusing on scripting and Glide APIs. Developing a solid understanding of these areas can really help you stand out as a ServiceNow professional.

As additional try to understand the UI Builder, the part of now assist and the part of AI of servicenow, They’re putting a lot of investment into it
