[Assessment Task Notes] Welcome to ServiceNow Micro-Cert: Create a Dashboard and Add a Visualization

Following on from my previous post, this is the sixth in a series documenting common validation errors that may be encountered in the Micro-Certification assessment simulator tasks.

Rather than providing the exact solution, these notes aim to help you troubleshoot validation errors by highlighting common pitfalls and guiding you toward the correct solution. The aim is to help you understand why validation fails, not just how to fix it.

Note: Some assessment simulator tasks assume that you are continuing directly from previous tasks and therefore still impersonating Platform User, even if this is not explicitly stated in the task instructions.

To build these guides, I deliberately validated the task before completing any steps to see what conditions were being checked. This allowed me to capture the full set of error messages that can appear when validation fails.

This assessment simulator task focuses on core platform functionality including:

  • Navigating the platform
  • Creating a new dashboard
  • Renaming a dashboard
  • Creating a Visualization
  • Updating a Visualization
  • Adding a Visualization to a dashboard

This task builds step-by-step so validation depends on the earlier steps being completed correctly.

Below are the error messages encountered, along with some guidance on how to troubleshoot them.

  1. Have you created a new dashboard, visualization, and saved both?
This error relates to steps 1-2 in the task instructions.

Validation is checking that both the dashboard and the visualization have been created and saved before moving on.

  2. Using the Visualization Designer, did you create the 'Incidents by Priority' report?
This error relates to steps 3-5 in the task instructions.

The focus here is on updating the visualization you created in the previous steps so that it matches the required report configuration exactly.

Hint: Don't forget to check both the Configuration and Details panels - it's easy to update one and miss the other, which will cause the validation to fail. I've seen a few people get caught out by this so it's worth paying extra attention here.

  3. Were you able to add the new report to the Dashboard?
This error is specific to step 6 of the task instructions.

Check that you have added the data visualization to the dashboard and saved the dashboard after making the change.

As with the rest of this series, the aim here isn't to hand over the solution, but to help you think through the validation errors and understand where you may have deviated from the task instructions.

That way, you're not just completing the simulator task, you're learning how to troubleshoot it which should help if you encounter issues in real-world examples.

If you've experienced other pitfalls along the way, feel free to share them by commenting below.
