[Lab Validation Notes] Welcome to ServiceNow (Zurich): Lists and Filters

This post shares learning notes from troubleshooting lab validation issues encountered while working through the Lists and Filters module in the Welcome to ServiceNow (Zurich) course. It focuses on common error messages you may encounter if validation fails.

Note: Some labs assume you are continuing from previous modules and still impersonating Platform User, even if this is not explicitly stated in the instructions.

The aim of this task is to provide you with hands-on experience of the concepts covered in the Lists and Filters Lesson content including:

  • Menu navigation
  • Locating and using filter conditions
  • Sorting columns
  • Using the List Editor
  • Personalizing the list to add/remove columns

Below are some of the error messages that may be presented when trying to validate the task

  1. Is the list filtered to only display active incidents?
This error relates to steps 1-4 in the task instructions. You need to ensure that your condition matches what is shown in the screenshot.

The OR condition is useful when you need to state that the results contain this or that, whereas the AND condition is explicit in that ALL of the specified conditions must be met.

Tip: Once you have applied the filter, you can review the details by selecting the funnel icon again, or by looking at the 'breadcrumbs' located above the column headers e.g., All > State != Closed > Assignment group is not empty > Assigned to is not empty

  2. Was the list sorted so that the Priority 1-Critical incidents show up at the top of the list?
This error is specific to step 5 in the task instructions.

While the instructions say to select the 'Priority' column to sort the list, you can also use the filter condition builder to control the order of results.

  3. Was the List Editor used to modify the State field for 10 Priority 1-Critical Incident records?
The error is indicating that one or more of the 10x Priority 1-Critical incidents has not had its state updated to "In Progress".

You could open and update each incident individually but that would be time consuming so take advantage of selecting and updating multiple records at the same time using the List Editor.

  4. Did you update Incident INC0000055 category to Software?
This error is specific to step 8 in the task instructions.

How you locate INC0000055 and change its 'Category' is up to you, just make sure that you don't set a 'Subcategory'.

These notes reflect my experience troubleshooting lab validation errors while working through this task and form part of a series documenting common lab validation issues encountered while completing the Welcome to ServiceNow (Zurich) course. As a Junior Developer, documenting these has helped me reinforce my understanding, and I hope it helps other learners avoid or resolve similar validation issues. If you've encountered additional pitfalls, feel free to comment and share them below.
