Hello Everyone,
I’m excited to share that I’ve recently completed the ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification.
My background is in Data Governance and Data Management, where I’ve worked extensively with enterprise data platforms, metadata management, and governance frameworks. Now, I’d like to continue building my ServiceNow skills in a way that aligns with my governance expertise.
I’d appreciate your guidance on:
🔹 Which ServiceNow certifications or career paths best complement both CSA and Data Governance?
🔹 Is ServiceNow GRC / IRM (Governance, Risk & Compliance / Integrated Risk Management) the right next step, or should I first consider areas like Data Foundations, CMDB, or App Builder?
🔹 What sequence of certifications would you recommend for someone with this blended background?
Thank you in advance for your insights!
Best,
Rak**bleep**ha Rajanna

Congratulations for your CSA certification.
With your background in Data Governance and Data Management, you can look at exploring options to learn CMDB and CSDM next before focusing on specialized modules like GRC and IRM. Refer below for CIS certification path for Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM),
CMDB is foundation for any organization and any project and plays a key role in success of every implementation. With your background, you can play a key role in populating CMDB via discovery or integrations or manual load, designing data models using CSDM, data certifications and work with remediation tasks.
There is no definitive answer to which ServiceNow module(s) would be the best fit for next steps in your journey. It is also about your passion and what interests you. All the best !
If this helped to answer your query, please mark it helpful & accept the solution.
Thanks,
Bhuvan

Hi @rakshithar9
Greetings!!
I am a ServiceNow Trainer and happy to share my thoughts.
The CSA is a good starting point, but it’s just the basics. You need to look at the bigger picture. Since you are already in Data Governance, moving towards GRC would be a strong option. At the same time, focusing on CMDB is also valuable.
Here’s a suggested learning path for you:
-
CSA → Data Foundation → GRC
-
In parallel, work on micro-certifications such as:
-
Flow Designer
-
App Engine Studio
-
I would also recommend not focusing only on GRC. Build your foundation with ITSM in parallel, as it will give your CV a significant boost.
Additionally, ServiceNow has added a Data Foundations certification, which gives deep insight into CMDB and CSDM. This can help you expand your expertise in core ServiceNow practices.

It must be open for all:
The new Certified Implementation Specialist - Data Foundations (CMDB & CSDM) Mainline Certification Exam launched in July 2025.
You may ask, what's in it for me (WIIFM)? The CIS-DF helps prepare an organization for successful AI outcomes and enables the following:
A Healthy, Trusted ServiceNow Data Foundation – sets the “Gold Standard”
- Implementers possess the skills and knowledge to successfully design, implement, and operationalize a ServiceNow CMDB supporting the CSDM framework.
- Leverages the three core data foundation pillars – Ingest, Govern, Insight
Credibility for partner implementers and trust by customers
- ServiceNow analyzes customer CMDB health and ties it back to implementation partner certifications
- Enhanced/new courses - CMDB Fundamentals, CSDM Fundamentals, and others
Employers can hire people they “trust” to have the right skillset
Customers can find partners with this certification in the SN Partner Finder to find qualified implementers
PARTNERS
The CIS-DF certification requirement for partners only applies to those who have Product Line Achievements (PLAs) in the following seven areas: ITOM Visibility, Security Incident Response, Vulnerability Response, ITSM Pro, ITSM Standard, ITAM HAM, and ITAM SAM.
To maintain or earn these seven PLAs, in addition to the CIS or Suite Certifications for those product areas, partners/Lead App Consultants will need to also have the Suite Certification - Data Foundations, which includes the new CIS - Data Foundations (CMDB & CSDM) Mainline Exam and the already existing Micro-Certs for CMDB Health and Configure the CMDB.
The deadline to pass this exam is December 31, 2026. This new mainline certification went live on July 25, 2025. The best link to find details about recommended and required training, exam details, and other information is found here: https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en/credentials/certified-implentation-specialist-data-foundation...
Suite certification details: https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en?id=learning_content_prev&course_id=05db3f9c476e6e10c00af23512...
As a partner, please register your deployments on the Partner Finder, in the Deployment Registry. We want to put a spotlight on those partners who have achieved this certification!
I am happy to be your point of contact for this new requirement. Although I am not responsible for partner communications, I am working with the partner success team. My understanding is that partners have been/are informed about this new mainline certification and requirement in the following ways:
- Newsletters are the current standard to communicate information to partners; they are sent monthly
- Partner Managers are responsible for 1:1 communications between SN and partners; they should provide details about deadlines, what's in it for me (WIIFM) - for our partners, and links to the recommended and required training to prepare for the exam. The template (Data Foundations Certification for ITx PLA Partners)is available in the Partner Email Templates in SharePoint.
