Hi Community,
One interesting thing I've noticed while working on ServiceNow projects is how valuable a Business Analyst / System Analyst background can be in consulting and implementation roles.
Skills such as:
- Process analysis and process design
- Stakeholder communication
- Requirements management
- UAT coordination
- Documentation and governance
seem highly transferable to ServiceNow projects.
However, when reading community discussions, I more often see people transitioning into ServiceNow from administration, development, support, or infrastructure backgrounds.
This made me wonder:
- How common is the BA/SA → ServiceNow career path?
- Did anyone here start their ServiceNow journey from a Business Analyst or System Analyst role?
- Which analyst skills turned out to be the most valuable in your ServiceNow career?
- Were there any skills you had to develop that were not part of a typical BA/SA background?
Looking forward to hearing your experiences and perspectives.
Thanks!

Hi @veranikadav ,
In every ServiceNow project , Lots of Business Analyst works. So If you can train your self on this path, definitely, its a good career option.
To become a servicenow business Analyst - I will suggest , go through following courses or career path:
1: Welcome to ServiceNow (Zurich) // It will help you to know basic things in ServiceNow and you can smoothly navigate within the tool.
2. Business Process Analyst Career Journey //Interesting career path provided by ServiceNow
Associate Business Analyst ->Practitioner Business Analyst ->Professional Business Analyst
3. Business Process Consultant (BPC) Best Practices for Implementation
Also most of the projects now looks for at least a mainline certified resource. In that case try to do CSA certification.
- For that complete ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals course from Servicenow University
- Practice again all lab task in The given learning instance.
- Practice in your Personal Developer Instance (PDI)
- Practice mock question with Correct Answer
- Practice from ServiceNow university provided practice : https://account.measureup.com/servicenow-university
- Check the syllabus from Certified System Administrator (CSA) Mainline Exam Blueprint
- If anything left or you are struggling with answering practice test, Revisit the course content.
- Once you are confident , Schedule the exam and Go for it.
If you want to any kind of Certification (mainline-micro) /Accrediation , you can check this blog for your suitable your role:

Thank you for your response and the resources.
I already work on ServiceNow projects and hold the CSA certification, so my question was more about career backgrounds within the ServiceNow ecosystem.
I was curious whether many ServiceNow consultants, architects, platform owners, or other professionals started their careers as Business Analysts or System Analysts before moving into ServiceNow-focused roles.
It would be interesting to hear whether you've seen this path on projects you've worked on.

Hi @veranikadav
I have come across several projects where professionals started their careers as developers and later transitioned into Business Analyst roles.
One key advantage of this career path is that they become techno-functional Business Analysts. Their technical background helps them understand the underlying technology, while their functional expertise enables them to communicate effectively with business stakeholders. This combination allows them to refine business requirements and translate them into well-defined user stories and backlog items more efficiently.
In my experience, such professionals are highly valuable and relatively rare resources within organizations.
Regarding your query, I have generally observed that Architects tend to come from a development background. However, roles such as Platform Owner or Consultant can often be filled by professionals who have progressed through a Business Analyst career path.

Hi @veranikadav
I am a hardcore BA/BPC and now moving toward the next level as a Platform Owner. I have spent around 10 years in this role, and I’m happy to share my learning and experience with you.
From a skills perspective, what you mentioned is correct, but from my experience, a BA/BPC needs much deeper platform knowledge. A functional BA must understand how the system connects with each module, what connects where, and how integrations/workflows function together.
Along with that, requirement gathering is the real core of a BA’s life:
-
What questions to ask
-
When and where to ask them
-
What agenda to prepare
-
What context needs to be presented in workshops
-
How to guide discussions with customers
- How to run workshops
These are key skills.
Now ServiceNow is moving more toward the BPC side, and the traditional BA role is gradually merging with BOC/BPC responsibilities. That is where things are heading.
How common is the BA/SA → ServiceNow career path?
Atul:
It is not very common, but in recent discussions with many members in my network, I have seen companies actively looking for BA/BPC profiles from developer or functional backgrounds. So it is definitely a good direction to move into.
ServiceNow itself also provides a dedicated learning journey for Business Analysts, which you can follow.
Did anyone here start their ServiceNow journey from a Business Analyst or System Analyst role?
Atul:
Yes, me personally. I started as a Process Engineer in support operations and then moved into a BA role around 2015. Today, I guide teams and build community discussions around the same topic.
Which analyst skills turned out to be the most valuable in your ServiceNow career?
Atul:
Platform knowledge.
The more you understand the platform, the easier it becomes to speak confidently with customers because BA/BPC roles are usually the first functional face of any project after the sales/presales stage.
Were there any skills you had to develop that were not part of a typical BA/SA background?
Atul:
-
Openness in communication
-
Courage to say “No” when needed
-
Articulating solutions in the right way
-
Documentation skills
-
Understanding process visibility and governance
-
Strong platform and business knowledge
These skills become extremely important over time.
I am also adding a few podcast videos from my channel where I discussed these topics with industry experts. Those may provide more insights and practical knowledge.
