How are you managing ServiceNow Store application and plugin updates?

We are working to formalize a KTLO process for keeping our ServiceNow Store applications and plugins current, and I would like to understand how other organizations are managing this.

One challenge we have found is that the products available for subscription/notification in the ServiceNow Store do not always align cleanly with the individual Store applications and plugins installed in the instance. This makes it difficult to establish a simple process for identifying new releases, assigning ownership, and determining what actually needs to be updated.

I would appreciate hearing how others are handling:

  • How do you identify when new Store application or plugin updates are released?
  • Do you rely on ServiceNow Store subscriptions/notifications, Application Manager, reports from sys_store_app, another tool, or a combination?
  • How do you assign ownership for reviewing updates?
  • Do your developers own updates for the ServiceNow products/capabilities they support?
  • How frequently do you review and install updates?
  • How much regression testing do you typically perform for Store application updates?
  • Do you differentiate testing based on the type or risk of the update?
  • How do you track updates that have been reviewed but intentionally deferred?
  • Do you try to remain on the latest version of Store applications, or maintain a defined version/currency threshold?
  • Have you found a good way to map ServiceNow Store product notifications back to the applications actually installed in your instance?

We have approved this work as part of our normal platform KTLO activities and are initially focused on getting our environment current, followed by establishing a sustainable monthly process.

I would especially appreciate examples from organizations that have already established a repeatable Store application/plugin maintenance program.
