ServiceNow delivers two major releases each year, bringing new features, improvements, and enhancements. However, many customers face challenges in understanding where to start, how to adopt new features, and how to manage deprecated functionalities with suitable alternatives. Recognizing these challenges, ServiceNow continues to evolve its upgrade experience, making it more seamless and efficient for customers.
One significant step in this evolution is the introduction of the "Upgrade Management Guided Setup", leveraging the "Playbook" experience. This structured approach ensures customers know exactly where to begin and what steps to follow before and after an upgrade.
Getting Started with the Upgrade Management Playbook
The upgrade process begins with an "Overview", where customers can explore built-in features that support and accelerate ServiceNow platform upgrades.
- A simple way to start the upgrade process is by selecting the major release version to which we wanted to upgrade the instance and then clicking “Get Started.”
- This action takes you to the "Guided Upgrade Experience", a step-by-step journey that outlines the necessary actions to successfully complete the upgrade.
Stages of the Upgrade Process
The guided setup consists of two key stages:
1. Pre-Upgrade Stage
Before upgrading, customers need to complete several preparatory activities to ensure a smooth transition. This stage provides a checklist of tasks that need to be addressed. (Refer to the screenshot below.)
2. Post-Upgrade Stage
Once the pre-upgrade activities are completed, customers move to the Post-Upgrade Stage, which includes activities designed to validate the success of the upgrade and address any issues. (Refer to the screenshot below.)
By following both stages, customers can confidently complete the upgrade process, ensuring they understand every step taken to enhance and optimize their platform.
