Achieving 100% CI accuracy in a CMDB is more of an ideal goal than a practical reality. In real-world IT environments, changes happen continuously — new servers are added, cloud resources are created or deleted automatically, applications are updated, systems are retired, and sometimes manual updates are missed.
Because of these constant changes, maintaining absolute accuracy at every moment is extremely difficult, even for mature organizations with strong CMDB processes.
That’s why most companies focus on maintaining a “trusted and healthy CMDB” rather than expecting perfect 100% accuracy. The goal is to keep the data as accurate, reliable, and up to date as possible using tools and practices such as Discovery, automation, Service Mapping, governance, reconciliation rules, and regular CMDB health checks.
In simple words:
A CMDB is a living and continuously changing system, not a static Excel sheet. So the real success is continuous improvement and maintaining high confidence in the CI data, rather than chasing absolute perfection.
