Hi everyone,
My name is Zafferuddin. I completed my B.Tech in 2024, and it's been almost two years since graduation. Unfortunately, I'm still confused about where to start my career.
I tried learning a few different technologies, but without proper guidance, things became messy and I couldn't stay on the right path. Now, I've decided to build my career in ServiceNow, and this time I want to do it with the right guidance.
I'm reaching out to the community for help. If you're an experienced ServiceNow professional or someone who has successfully started their career in this field, I would really appreciate your advice.
As a complete beginner, I'd love to know:
What should I learn first?
What skills are important?
Where can I learn ServiceNow effectively?
How should I prepare to get my first job as a fresher?
Any guidance, roadmap, learning resources, or personal experience would mean a lot to me.
Thank you in advance for your support. I'm looking forward to your valuable suggestions.
As I am keen to expand my knowledge in ServiceNow, I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could provide on where to start learning. If you have any resources or tips for a beginner like me, I would be eager to learn from your experience.

ahoy @zaffu0903,
instead of focusing on any module (ITSM, CSM, HR, SecOps, etc.) you might want to set your goals for a role according to your ambitions. Business analyst for CSM will need to have similar set of skills to business analyst for ITSM and similarly with others.
You should always start with the ITSM because it's in every single ServiceNow instance (you cannot have SN without ITSM), understanding this module will make everything else easier.
Some people recommend you to go with Now Assist, I wouldn't recommend that as a starter, it's indeed demanding topic but without understanding the platform fundamentals one will be lost, so it's better to have some basic knowledge before going to the most complex areas.
Other mentioned mock exams, I would strongly discourage you from any unofficial materials, it will only teach you incorrect, erroneous or non-existing nonsense. Instead, let me share these official resources with you:
- Get Started with ServiceNow University
- Learn about ServiceNow and earn badges, points, certificates, and improve your rank.
- Most courses are free, only a few are paid.
- Start with the "Welcome to ServiceNow " training, it's fun and gives you your first certificate!
- The Certified System Administrator (CSA) certificate is a good start, it's useful for almost any ServiceNow role.
- Trainings at the SN University provide temporary lab instances with pre-installed plugins and apps.
ServiceNow Career Journeys & ServiceNow Career Paths
- Pick a ServiceNow Career Path that matches your interests.
- We’ll help you start at the right level based on your skills.
- A ServiceNow Credential gives you industry recognition.
- It proves your investment and boosts your professional value.
Learning Plans at the Developer Portal
- Request your Personal Developer Instance (PDI), your own ServiceNow sandbox to practice safely.
- You can try almost everything for free (except a few advanced features like AI).
- Explore guides, tutorials, blogs, and documentation to learn more.
- Short and self-paced modules.
- Best practices, references,
Good luck! 🤞💪

Hello @zaffu0903
Welcome to servicenow community
You can start with practicing in Servicenow PDI .
When you start exploring ServiceNow PDI, begin with understanding the basic platform UI:
Application Navigator, Banner, Content Frame (UI16)
Explore Forms and List Views
Company Branding and changing the Welcome Page
Context Menu (what it is and its types)
Breadcrumbs and how they work
Next, move on to data modeling basics:
Table and Field creation
Table dependencies and Table Extensions
Field types
Views
Important OOTB tables like User (sys_user), Group (sys_user_group), Role (sys_user_role), Delegations
Once you are comfortable with this, explore core configuration concepts:
Reference Qualifiers
Dot-walking
UI Policies
Dictionary Overrides
ACLs
Priority Lookup
Difference between Configuration vs Customization
Then understand data movement and backup concepts:
Update Sets (how to take backup of your work)
Update Set transfer methods
Import Sets
After learning these basics, you can confidently move forward to explore Service Management modules like:
Incident
Problem
Change
Request
And then deep dive into the Development part.
CSA is the basic and most important certification for ServiceNow beginners
Main topics to focus on:
Platform UI and navigation
Tables, fields, forms, and list views
Users, groups, and roles
Basic ITSM concepts

Once you follow this path, your ServiceNow learning journey will be smooth and structured
Try to spend 2-3 hours daily on community which will help you understand different real time scenarios ,different approaches . Explore University Course which also enhance your knowledge.

Hello @zaffu0903 ,
Here are few tips for CSA :
First of all, for the ServiceNow CSA exam, there are two recommended prerequisite courses. These courses help you understand all the core ServiceNow concepts, configurations, and skills required to clear the CSA.
They also provide essential hands-on knowledge that every ServiceNow Administrator should have.
Start reading Servicenow CSA E-book , you will get your e-book from fundamental course .
Most of the time, people get bored reading such a big eBook. However, it is very helpful for the exam. If you have already gone through the concepts in the eBook, and the same topics appear in the exam, you can quickly recognize that those questions are from specific sections.
So, don’t ignore the eBook—try to complete it.
The most important parts of the eBook are the last sections, such as Security Center, Shared Responsibility Model, and ServiceNow Encryption. These sections are often overlooked, but based on personal experience, around 4–5 questions can come from them.
Also, most of the theory and concepts in the eBook are already covered in ServiceNow prerequisite courses, so it becomes easier to revise quickly.
CSA exam blueprint you can refer from here :

Hello @zaffu0903 ,
Below are the key points which you should focused on :
1. ServiceNow Administration (CSA)—Start with the System Administrator learning path and prepare for the CSA certification. Learn users, groups, tables, forms, lists, security, notifications, update sets, and platform fundamentals.
2. Scripting – Spend time learning JavaScript along with ServiceNow scripting concepts like Client Scripts, Business Rules, Script Includes, GlideRecord, GlideAjax, UI Actions, and Flow Designer. Strong scripting skills are expected in most ServiceNow roles.
3. ITSM Fundamentals – Get hands-on with Incident, Problem, Change, Knowledge, Service Catalog, and Request Management. These are the most commonly used modules in real-world projects.
4. Build on a Personal Developer Instance (PDI) – Create your own applications and implement real-world use cases instead of only following tutorials. Practical experience is what interviewers often look for.
5. Learn Integrations and Automation – Explore REST APIs, Import Sets, Transform Maps, IntegrationHub, and Flow Designer, as these are widely used in projects.
6. Practice Interview Scenarios – Understand common ServiceNow interview questions and be prepared to explain the logic behind your implementations.
Once you're comfortable with the above, you can specialize in modules like HRSD, CSM, GRC, ITOM, or AI-powered capabilities such as Now Assist, depending on your career interests and market demand.
The key is to balance learning with hands-on practice.
If my response helped marked as helpful and accept the solution.
