This question must have been asked in the past, however I was unable to search with the right keyword, hence asking the question here in this forum.
For CI's that are being discovered in ServiceNow, specifically when it comes to Physical devices such as Switches or Ruuters, the concern I have is these CI's get discovered however the old entry is mapped to a switch (X) that exists gets overwritten and discovered to a new Switch (Y). while other attributes get updated, the created date entry for that particular CI would still remain as per the old device when that was discovered.
The question is have is should the old entry be marked as Retired or Decommissioned and allow the new device to be discovered so that a new entry gets recorded within CMDB with a new created date...
Would the above scenario also apply for cases where an RMA are performed for a switch. Should the old entry be updated or a new entry be created.
Can the forum throw some light on what is the correct process of discovery that should be followed.
Thanks in advance,
Thomas

Is it an entirely different switch that is getting updated with the data of a new switch? If that is the case, then the data of old switch should have been updated by discovery and the new switch should get created as a new record. If the old switch is no longer in use, then it should be marked as 'Retired'. You should check the 'Identifier entries' for the relevant classes (E.g. IP switch class) from the 'Identification rules' tab of that class in CI class manager and then work on correcting them to make sure that existing devices are identified and updated correctly. The following URL has details about identification rules:
