CMDB Network Adapters: Why is a network adapter's name needed?

I am considering modifying the IRE identification rule for Network Adapters (cmdb_ci_network_adapter) to use only the mac address instead of the default mac address and name.
Has anyone done this before, or can think of any unintended consequences for modifying the identification rule this way?
While the name would be useful, I am struggling to find reasons why its 100% necessary for matching in IRE. I will still be adding a name; however, I plan to use reconciliation rules to determine which CMDB data source takes priority.

Analyze the data in network adapter CI class and check whether you find any issues like duplicate CIs. If yes, you need to see whether any changes to identifier entries need to be done based on the unique attributes present in the data sources which are populating the network adapters.
