To me there are 2 definitions that can apply.
1: A managed CI is a CI where a Managed by Group or Managed by field is populated to indicate that it is being managed. An unmanaged CI would then be if the Managed by Group or Managed by is not filled in or invalid.
2: A managed CI is a CI that is activtly managed and used in process like Incident, Problem, Change, etc. An unmanaged CI would be something that is just providing structure for the CMDB. Like an Azure Datacenter
