Network Gear discovery and the install status for existing CI

Hello All,

Does the install status change to installed when the discovery happens on the existing network device?

I am trying to run this use case from Retired/Absent status. However, its not working.

What is the OOB behavior?

It is designed different for different class?

Thanks is Advance!

HI @mamtameshra ,

Out-of-the-box (OOB) behavior for Install Status with Discovery
* Install status field = lifecycle indicator for the CI (cmdb_ci.install_status).
* Discovery updates this status only under certain rules:
1. If CI is newly discovered → Install Status set to Installed (value = 1).
2. If CI already exists in CMDB → OOB Discovery does not automatically flip status back to Installed if it is currently set to Retired or Absent.
* Reason: ServiceNow assumes lifecycle state changes (like Retired) are intentional business decisions, not to be overridden automatically by Discovery.
3. Operational Status (cmdb_ci.operational_status) is what Discovery updates more dynamically (On, Off, Down, etc.), not the Install Status.

You will need to create data manager policy for this. Also you need to make sure this is included in change process. So the CMDB stays up to date.
