Hey ServiceNow Community!
I'm thrilled to share that I recently passed the ServiceNow CIS – Data Foundations (CIS-DF) certification on my first attempt, answering 71 out of 75 questions correctly. Having worked deeply on CMDB and CSDM projects, I know first hand that this exam is not easy it's concept-driven, scenario-heavy, and demands genuine understanding. So I decided to write a comprehensive study guide that covers everything you need to ace it.
Whether you're just starting your prep or looking for a final-week cheat sheet, this guide is for you.
Firstly Understand the Exam Blueprint Weights :
LD1: Configuration – 15%
- Understanding about CI Class Manager, IRE, CMDB 360 / Multisource CMDB.
LD2: Ingest – 19%
- Data ingestion- Discovery, Service Graph Connector, IntegrationHub, Import Sets, Manual CI creation.
LD3: Govern – 35%
- Understanding about CMDB Health Score, Data Manager, De-duplication, CMDB Workspace, Principal Classes.
LD4: Insight – 20%
- Master the CMDB Query Builder, Unified Map, CMDB Foundation Dashboard, Business Value
LD5: CSDM Fundamentals – 11%
- Common Service Data Model: prescriptive framework for service classification.

My Preparation Pillars :
My preparation was built on solid, accessible pillars. If you follow this path with discipline, a near-perfect score is absolutely within your reach.
1. CMDB Fundamentals On-Demand Course (Foundation) : Link
- This is your primary content source watch every video and complete every lab. Focus on configure the CMDB, CMDB Health, Ingestion methods, IRE rules. Also memorize all quiz answers within the course.
2. Common Service Data Model (CSDM) Fundamentals : Link
- Complete this course, this is tested heavily under Domain 5 and also bleeds into Govern and Insight questions. Memorize each CSDM domain its CI type, ownership persona, and key tables. Understand the Crawl > Walk > Run > Fly adoption approach.
- This CSDM 5 latest white paper will get you all this.
3. CMDB Workspace & Data Manager :
- In CMDB Workspace learn all tabs, tiles, charts, metrics, and scorecards. For CMDB Data Manager learn how to create and configure Data Manager policies.
4. Prioritize Hands-On Experience :
This exam is scenario-based. Theoretical knowledge alone will not carry you through. You must see the UI to answer correctly.
- Navigate to CI Class Manager and explore table hierarchies.
- Open CMDB Health Dashboard go through all tabs and scorecards.
- Create a simple Data Manager policy and observe its behavior.
- Use Query Builder to build relationship queries between CIs.
- Open CMDB Workspace and explore all sections: Overview, Health, CI Explorer.
- Simulate IRE by creating a Discovery source and checking identification rules.
Cheat Sheets : The Must-Memorize

| Orphan CIs | CIs have no relationships or usage | Relate, retire, or delete unused CIs |
Why CIS-DF Is Now Critical :
The CIS-DF certification validates your expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining a healthy CMDB aligned with the CSDM framework. It is now a mandatory prerequisite for several major ServiceNow certification paths.
> Prerequisite Exam : Required before registering for ITSM, HAM, SAM, Discovery, SecOps, VR, or Service Mapping certifications.
> Existing Cert Expiry : If you already hold one of those 7 certifications, they will expire after 31 Dec 2026 if CIS-DF is not completed.
> Cost FREE until 30th June 2026 - a huge opportunity.
> Covers CMDB health, data governance, CSDM framework, data ingestion, and CI lifecycle management.
Exam at a Glance :
> Total Questions : 75 questions
> Time Allowed : 90 minutes (~0.83 min per question)
> Question Types : Scenario-based MCQ, Multiple-select (checkbox), Drag & Drop (8-10 questions) Drag & Drop Note Left side may have more options than available slots read carefully
> Difficulty : Hard / Near-Hard. Even after studying all quiz answers, expect unknown scenarios
> Passing Score : ~70% (not officially published, aim for conceptual mastery)
Final Suggestion & Experience :
The CIS-DF exam is quite hard. Memorizing answers from quizzes is not enough, the exam throws curveballs that require you to reason from first principles. But if you understand WHY CMDB governance works the way it does, WHY IRE exists, and HOW CSDM structures data, you will handle scenarios you've never seen before.
The key insight that helped me most: every exam answer that improves data quality, follows governance best practices, or uses native ServiceNow tools (over custom solutions) is likely the right one. Keep that mindset throughout.
Good luck to everyone preparing!
