Usage of device type field for network gear - Best practice

In our environment, the network team uses devices that can serve multiple functions depending on the configuration. For example, a Cisco model might function as a router in one scenario and as a firewall in another. The network team tracks this functional role in their inventory.

However, when ServiceNow discovers these devices, it classifies them based on the default device type (e.g., identifies it as a router), which may not reflect its actual role in our setup (e.g., functioning as a firewall).

We’re exploring ways to ensure that the network team can view all devices functioning as firewalls in one place, regardless of what ServiceNow initially classifies them as. One option is to use the "Device Type" field (a dropdown) and have the network team manually update it to reflect the actual function.

Before we proceed, I'm curious to know how others in the community handle this situation:

  • Do you rely on manual updates to the "Device Type" field?
  • Have you implemented any automation or custom logic to reclassify devices based on their functional role?
  • Are there any best practices or recommendations for managing multi-function devices in CMDB?

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.
