Hi,

I learnt CMDB concept on my own but wanted to know what are the day-to-day activities or responsibilities of CMDB developer or administrator. That would be highly appreciated.

Following are examples of some activities:

  • Performing CMDB data updates based on change requests, RITMs etc. This can involve CI creation, modification and retirement
  • Developing and maintaining integrations which populate the CMDB
  • Configuring and maintaining reports/dashboards (including CMDB health metrics & preferences configuration)
  • Adding new attributes to CI classes based on requirements
  • Monitoring data populated on CMDB health dashboard and CMDB & CSDM data foundations dashboard. Taking actions like working on deduplication tasks, stale tasks etc. to improve the data quality.
  • Investigating issues with ServiceNow discovery and working on resolving them
  • Performing actions to improve CSDM alignment (E.g. data migration to correct classes as per CSDM)
  • Performing CMDB data audits
  • Configuring policies on CMDB data manager

These points should cover the important activities of a CMDB developer and admin in general. But the actual set of activities will depend on the maturity of the organization's CMDB, ServiceNow features that are currently used, how your ServiceNow and configuration management teams are organized etc. If you have access to Nowcreate, the 'CMDB process guide' asset which can be accessed from the following URL will be useful. It has a 'Roles and responsibilities' section which would be useful to refer while you are defining the roles and responsibilities as part of the CMDB process definition.

Hi @SNOW Learner09

The CMDB manager should monitor and audit the CMDB activities and transactions, such as data collection, discovery, reconciliation, verification, and synchronization, and resolve any issues or discrepancies that may arise.
