I am trying to determine why I would want to create a ServiceNow Business Application as a Platform Host, then create Business applications for each module we have as Platform Applications versus just creating the Business Applications for each module and populating the Platform with ServiceNow. What is the benefit of having that Platform Host Business Application and how does it affect APM?

Hi @kelli
Both options have no effect in terms of automation. They are for reporting, and principally for the Bubble Chart used in App Rationalisation, so you can compare Business Apps by various factors. You can also use the Application Family reference if you want to group Business Apps by a common reference.
One of the limitations of Platform Host > Platform Application is what happens when the Platform Application can itself host Applications? In this instance you have to make a choice on the approach - either set the "host" as an Application Family record, then have the (next level down) App be a Platform Host and finally Platform Applications, or don't use hierarchy at all.
However, it is quite common that you will need to identify the platforms in your application inventory so it may be wise to limit using Platform Host/Platform App to recognised COTS platforms like SAP, ServiceNow etc.
I hope this helps!
