Hi
We are planning to move more into CSDM and I have one nagging question....
We have many technical IT services, like; Storage, Servers, Certificates, Databases, Restore etc. and they all have different service offering, lets refer to them as "simple technical services".
The simple technical services are ordered and consumed through higher level services. As an example, we have a service called "Compute" and that is the product of 10'ish simple technical services.
"Compute" is only available internally in IT and not for business.
Would you use business services for Compute or Technical Services (But them perhaps have two levels?)
Or am I overcomplicating stuff 🙂

Hi Thomas,
if you are a data center service provider as a business then for sure. You sell compute.
As an IT department you might sell it as well to your internal business (app owners). In general that is done via Technology Service Offering related catalog items.
Some companies use CSM for internal consumption, in that case product offerings can be modeled as:
- Primary product
- Secondary mandatory product
- optional products
- add on services
This is in general what you see in a order portal as well where cost is depending based on the configuration of what you order. That is a distinct between a service catalog and a product catalog.
The supply chain (decomposition) of the offering is not always visible for the requester, but is important for the service owner.

Hi @Oktoberthomas ,
Based on that you're not selling compute to the business, but compute is consumed by IT as a building block to provide a business service, then I would state from my point of view that we are talking about a technical service and not a business service. The technical service "Compute" then comes with different offerings as you mentioned: Storage, Servers, Certificates, Databases, Restore.
If my answer has helped with your question, please mark my answer as the accepted solution and give a thumbs up.
