CSDM foundation organizational hierarchy guidance

Jessica18

Beyond the CSDM 5 white paper, for the CSDM Foundational stage/domain, where can I find the best guidance for establishing an organizational hierarchy for the company, business unit, and department tables? And does guidance exist to describe the pros and cons for the various approach(es) to consider?

We are reviewing our current usage of these foundational tables to determine if our approach should be modified to better align with the CSDM framework.

There are some variations of the below depending on the ServiceNow products you have - because those products may introduce their own tables that further sub-divide these foundation tables

  • Company - Focus on legal entities. For your own organisation, If there is a policy / legal / geographic separation that may require processes, approvals, or data separation changes then consider a different company record.
  • Business Unit - an internal division or functional segment that holds something in common. Used frequent in the design and planning domain
  • Department - lowest level of an organisational group. These can be hierarchical if the organisation has a deep structure
